Built forCabin Country.
Custom cabins, boathouses, docks and renovations on shorelines most builders will not travel to. Talon works where the road ends.
We don't build
like a town contractor.
Barge schedules, ice-out windows, granite that will not take a footing, and a lumber order that has to arrive on the right boat on the right day. Most builders quote a water-access job once and never quote another. We build in it every season.
One crew, foundation to finish.
Talon is a carpentry-led general contractor. The people framing your walls are the people hanging your trim, which is why the detail holds up. We manage the whole project so you are not chasing five trades across a lake.
- Water & ice accessBarge, boat and winter-road logistics planned into the schedule, not bolted on after.
- Rock & shoreline experiencePinned footings, screw piles, cribs and retaining structures built for Canadian Shield sites.
- Season-aware schedulingThe plan is built around freeze-up, ice-out and the weeks you actually want to be at the lake.
- Straight answers on costDetailed scope up front. Change orders in writing. No surprises in August.
Access Is the Job
On a water-access site the building is the easy part. We plan the logistics first and price them openly, because that is where cabin projects blow their budgets.
Self-Performed
Framing, finish, timber, marine and site work all in-house. Nothing gets lost in a handoff between subcontractors who have never met each other.
Built for -40
Envelope, mechanicals and winterization specified for a building that has to survive six months alone. Anything less is a warranty claim waiting to happen.
Weekly Eyes
Photo and progress updates every week, good week or bad. You never wonder what is happening on your site while you are in the city.
Services &
Capabilities
Everything a cabin property needs, from a cleared rock face to a finished kitchen. Six disciplines, one crew, one point of contact.
Custom Cabins & New Builds
Four-season cabins, guest bunkies, garages and full family compounds. Designed around the site you actually have, not the flat lot you wish you had.
- Water-access new construction
- Pinned footings & screw piles on bedrock
- High-performance winter envelope
- Timber frame & exposed structure
- Bunkies, garages & outbuildings
- Architect coordination or design-build
Boathouses & Docks
The structures that take the most abuse on the property. Ice, wake, wind and water all year, visited half of it.
- Wet slips & dry slips
- Timber and steel cribs set on rock
- Marine rails & boat lifts
- Floating and pipe dock systems
- Upper-deck living space
- In-water work permits
Renovations & Additions
Most of cabin country went up in the 1950s and 60s by whoever could get a boat across. Some of it is worth saving.
- Camp to four-season conversion
- Additions & screened porches
- Kitchens, baths & millwork
- Re-roofs, windows & insulation
- Rot, settlement & failed footings
- Structural repair & levelling
Shoreline & Site Work
Before anything gets built, something has to be cleared, levelled, drained or blasted. We do the unglamorous half too.
- Selective clearing & bush roads
- Driveways & equipment access
- Retaining & armour stone walls
- Rock and timber stairs to the water
- Septic systems & service trenching
- Shoreline stabilization
Decks, Gazebos & Saunas
The part of the property people actually use. Cedar, timber and stone, detailed so it ages the way you want.
- Multi-level cedar decks
- Screened gazebos & porches
- Lakeside saunas
- Stone patios & seating walls
- Fire pits & outdoor kitchens
- Wood-fired pizza ovens
Off-Grid & Winterization
A cabin that cannot look after itself for six months is a liability. The systems side is where a build quietly succeeds or fails.
- Solar arrays & battery banks
- Generator integration
- Lake intakes, wells & treatment
- Propane, wood & in-floor heat
- Drain-down & winterization
- Remote temperature monitoring
If it needs a barge,
it needs Talon.
The logistics are where cabin projects go over budget and over schedule. So that is where we do our best work.
- Material stagingLoads sequenced so the crew is never waiting on a boat and you are never paying for one twice.
- Crew accommodationSelf-sufficient crews that stay on site through the build week instead of burning daylight in transit.
- Winter build windowsIce roads open access that boats cannot. Used properly, they save real money on heavy material.
- Permits & shoreline rulesMunicipal, MNRF and in-water work approvals handled before the barge is loaded.

Joe Devlin
20+ Years on Lake of the Woods
Joe has been building around Lake of the Woods for more than two decades, first as a carpenter and then running his own crews across some of the most awkward sites in the district. Talon Built is that experience given a bigger frame: the same hands-on carpentry standard, now backed by the systems, project management and logistics a serious cabin build demands.
He still walks every site and still swings a hammer, which is the part clients tend to notice first. The crew he has built is small on purpose. Versatile, self-sufficient, and comfortable spending a week on an island with a generator and a schedule to keep.
They barged in through a July that would not stop raining and still handed us the keys before Labour Day. The cabin is the best-built thing on our bay.Placeholder testimonial · swap for a real client quote
Four steps,
no mystery.
Cabin construction runs on trust. You are often hundreds of kilometres away while the work happens. This is how we make that workable.
Site Visit
We come to the property, by boat if that is what it takes. Access, rock, slope, services, and what you actually want out of the place. Nothing gets priced properly from photos alone.
Scope & Estimate
A written scope with the logistics priced in. You see what the barge costs, what the permits cost, and where the real money sits. Allowances laid out line by line, so there is nothing buried.
Build
One crew, one schedule, photo updates every week. Materials sequenced against the access window. You always know what happened on site while you were away.
Handover
Walkthrough, deficiency list closed out, systems explained, and a maintenance plan for a building that sits empty half the year. Then we are still on the end of the phone.
Before you ask.
That is most of our work. We plan barge loads, crew stays and material staging as part of the schedule, and we price the logistics openly in the estimate so you can see exactly what access is costing you.
For a new build, scope it a full season ahead. Cabin country has a narrow window, and the projects that run smoothly are the ones with drawings, permits and material orders settled before the ice goes out. Dock work and smaller renovations can often be fit in with less notice.
Yes, and sometimes it is the smart move. Ice roads open access to islands that would otherwise need multiple barge trips, which saves real money on heavy material. Interior work carries on through the cold months with temporary heat.
We do. Building permits, shoreline and in-water work approvals, septic approvals, and coordination with local townships and the MNRF. If a project needs an engineer or surveyor, we bring them in.
Access, foundation conditions and finish level drive the number far more than square footage, which is why we will not throw out a figure before seeing the site. What we will do is give you an honest range early, so nobody wastes a season on a plan that was never going to fit the budget.
Depending on the season and where the crew already is, yes. Dock repairs, deck rebuilds and work near an active site are usually workable. Ask.

Next season fills fast.
Cabin country has a short build window. The projects that go smoothly are the ones scoped the season before. Send us the site and we will tell you what is realistic.
